Mission Statement:

The Mission of Move to ACT
is to foster an environment for the animals of central Indiana that is safe and humane by engaging members of our community into action through education and promotion of collaborative programs based on principles of respect, accountability and integrity.

Move to ACT (MtA) is a 501(c)3 grassroots initiative that came into existence to help the Humane Society of Indianapolis regain the public's trust which was compromised by practices that embarrassed the public confidence in the agency. At one time HSI was one of the wealthiest nonprofit animal welfare agencies in the country. Relative to this initiative is an article on "rescuing". Please visit the one-eyed dog at: Winky, Who's rescuing whom?

Practices of commingling of assets, conversion of property and public charitable trust invasion was too much to passively observe while animals were being destroyed at the rate of 20,000/year. Several other local animal service organizations, (Spay-Neuter Services of Indiana, Inc., Alliance for Responsible Pet Ownership, Inc., Home for Friendless Animals, Inc., and Southside Animal Shelter, Inc.), along with a relative of Mary Crume ( Norma Jean Balcom) stepped up to the plate with mtA (and a passionate, sympathetic and heroic attorney, Veronica Jarnagin) to help stop the bleeding.

In the course of this Humane Society exercise, mtA appreciated that a very real challenge for animals is the delivery, or lack thereof, accurate information on their behalf. Intentional or unintentional delivery of manipulated (mis)information misdirects resources and compromises the realization of optimum stewardship. We feel that stewardship is both a responsibility and a gift.

Our campaigns have grown.

Why do we care?

George Angell (founder of the Massachusetts SPCA in 1868) answers:

"I am working at the roots. When human beings finally learn to honor the spirit of all beings most of the world's problems will be solved."

MtA invites you to join us in being sure that the animals on our watch are not being denied optimum care and treatment because of misinformation and lack of available resources. If you see this happening, move to act.

Press Release:

Move to ACT (mtA) is a watchdog/educational organization recognizing that the challenge of improving our Indianapolis community’s animal welfare system - that currently destroys 40-50 companion animals/day for population control - is to bring from behind-closed-doors accurate information to the public. MtA feels that misinformation, euphemisms and the misallocation of resources raise a host of ethical questions and dilemmas that prevents the public from becoming a part of the solution.

MtA works to encourage:

  1. That the public and private grantors to animal service organizations know how their financial gifts are used by an agency
  2. That animal service agencies use gifts wisely and respectful of the donor’s wishes, and
  3. That there be accountability for donor dollars.
MtA works to inform lawmakers and the public of the shortfalls of Breed Specific Legislation and the misguided perception of pit bull terriers because of media frenzy

MtA wants the public to be aware that there is significant animal abuse in the form of dog fighting in our community that results in the horrific treatment of many animals and that it is the people who train fighting dogs and/or allow their dogs to roam the streets and breed who are the real offenders to our public safety and NOT the breed of dog.

Dog fighting is a form of animal abuse that reflects a pathetic illness in our city that impacts all citizens, especially young children who become desensitized to the infliction of pain and suffering.

MtA encourages that if you witness abuse or neglect of either an animal or the financial gifts that are meant for their relief - that you...
MOVE to ACT.
Silence or taking no action is a betrayal to those who have no voice.
